How blood donors made Ngaiire’s life possible

How blood donors made Ngaiire’s life possible

For Ngaiire, music has always been more than a performance. It’s been a way of understanding the world and processing the things she couldn’t say out loud. As one of the lead artists behind Lifeblood’s Unlikely Version of Sia’s ‘Unstoppable’ with Tina Arena, she brings her story and her strength into every note.

That strength was forged early. As a child, Ngaiire was diagnosed with ganglioneuroblastoma, a rare and deadly cancer. She spent years moving in and out of hospitals, undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and multiple surgeries. It was a harrowing ordeal for such a small child to go through, and she couldn’t have done it without the multiple blood transfusions that helped keep her going.

Cancer wasn’t the only thing that shaped Ngaiire’s childhood. Music arrived in her life when she was 12. At a time when everything felt so hard music became a safe place to make sense of the turmoil around her.

It’s one of the reasons the Unlikely Version, and the message of ‘Unstoppable’, resonated so deeply with her. The song mirrors what she learned as a young girl fighting for her life — to keep going.

What feels extraordinary to Ngaiire is the way the artists and band members involved in the project found themselves together. Different lives, different stories, all intersecting at one moment. And it was made possible thanks to the generosity of donors.

Ngaiire speaks about feeling lucky and blessed to be here — to have a life, a career, and a creative voice made possible because someone chose to donate blood. “It’s an incredible thing to think about what we can do for each other,” she says. “You’re giving someone a second chance at life. I’m a living example of that generosity and the benefits are tenfold.”
