More about the reason
My extended family has always placed strong importance on donating blood and plasma, so I grew up with a deep awareness of blood, plasma, and bone marrow donation. My mother, a nurse, even donated bone marrow to a young girl, which made the impact of donation especially real to me. She has also undergone several major surgeries, including procedures to remove a brain tumour and thyroid cancer. With the recent news that the brain tumour has returned, she is preparing for another surgery in the coming days.
In Year 11, a close friend of mine was diagnosed with a form of leukaemia and, sadly, passed away just a week after our graduation. During his treatment, he relied heavily on donated blood products. After his passing, his family encouraged others to donate in his memory and founded “Leavers of Life Blood,” an initiative aimed at inspiring high school graduates to get involved.
These experiences are why I began donating as soon as I turned 18, and they are the reason I will continue to donate for as long as I am physically able.
