How blood donors rescued Heather

When Heather was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), her life changed almost overnight. A routine blood test revealed that Heather had almost no platelets, leaving her at serious risk of bleeding. Her clotting factors were so low, doctors had to administer a blood transfusion before they could even perform a biopsy to confirm her diagnosis.

Once the blood cancer diagnosis was confirmed, Heather’s medical team moved quickly and began intensive chemotherapy. The treatment was designed to destroy the cancer cells, but it also placed enormous strain on the healthy blood cells her body needed to recover. Throughout her treatment, donated red blood cells, platelets, plasma and other blood products helped support Heather when her body couldn’t do it on its own.

During her first round of chemotherapy, Heather spent five weeks in hospital and received a steady stream of blood products, Transfusions became part of daily life, sometimes arriving in the middle of the night when her platelet levels dropped too low to wait until morning.

For Heather, the word her medical team used for transfusions stayed with her: “rescue”. As chemotherapy and cancer affected her body's ability to produce healthy blood cells, donated blood products were the only way they could keep her stable enough to continue treatment.

“They ran everything down as low as they could without me dying, and then they rescued me with blood transfusions.”

As Heather underwent treatment, friends, relatives and colleagues began donating blood. Some were already donors, while others were motivated to donate after seeing what Heather was going through.

For Heather, their actions showed how one person’s illness could inspire an entire community to help. Today, Heather is in remission and deeply grateful for the donors whose generosity made her treatment possible.

“Thank you doesn’t feel like enough,” she says. “Donors might not know the effect their donation will have, but there was a whole ward full of people like me who needed it.”

Heather’s story is a powerful reminder that blood donation can provide vital support for people with cancer, giving them the strength and time they need to continue their treatment and return to the lives they love.
