Do Botox injections and blood donations mix?

Botox has officially hit the mainstream. Around 17% of Australians have had Botox at some point, making it one of the most common cosmetic treatments available — right up there with eyelash extensions and even more popular than waxing. 

Why do we ask about Botox and fillers 

Botox and dermal fillers are quick appointments, but they still involve injections. Anytime the skin is broken, there’s a small risk of infection. That’s why Lifeblood asks about cosmetic injectables when checking eligibility. 

It’s the same reason we ask about tattoos, piercings and other minor procedures. Not to judge, just to help keep you, and the person receiving your donation, safe. 

So, can you donate after Botox? 

In most cases, yes, and sooner than you might think. If you had Botox or fillers given by a registered healthcare provider, you only need to wait until the injection site has healed and any swelling has subsided. 

Not sure whether your healthcare provider was registered?  

The simplest way to check is to look up the clinician who treated you on the Ahpra register of practitioners. If they’re currently registered, you can be confident that they meet Australian regulatory standards. 

When in doubt, don’t rule yourself out 

One of the biggest reasons people don’t donate is uncertainty. They assume they’re not eligible. The reality is, most fit and healthy people can still give — even if their circumstances mean they need to wait a little while.
