At this stage, no.
We spent a lot of time considering people in your situation when we changed the rules for gay and bisexual men in 2025. But, right now, you won’t be able to donate. Even if your partner maintains an undetectable viral load.
This is because:
- Some people on treatment don’t reach undetectable levels, or have temporary changes in viral load.
- We can’t keep up to date with your partner’s test results while protecting their privacy.
- Eligibility rules need to be simple and consistent to protect patients who receive plasma-derived medicines.
We know this can be disappointing, especially when you’re enthusiastic about saving lives.
Advocacy can be just as powerful. You can spread the word about how donating saves lives on social media (find us @lifebloodau), register your intent to be an organ donor, or support the great humanitarian work of the Australian Red Cross.
